Are you thinking of a modern kitchen?  Looking to get a handleless kitchen? Worried that it will be bland and boring?  We’ve seen plans for pretty limited and un-imaginative modern kitchens – they’ve all been “cheap” -but at what price?  Do you want a boring design with no features, no imagination?  Of course you don’t – not for the most important room in your home!?  You want to LOVE your kitchen.  You want to love something different about it every day.  You want to have something beautiful to be uniquely yours.

Our clients came to us with plans for an amazing home – and we knew from the outset that they wanted a pretty special modern kitchen to fit in with their lifestyle and home.  We sat down for our usual preliminary design chat.  We discussed storage, features, worktops, appliances, the overall room and it’s layout, window locations and, of course, budgets.

Kitchen Design:

The first step after getting a clearer picture from our client about their brief was to get the design correct.  Our clients wish list included:

  • lots of practical storage
  • that the kitchen should work with the amazing windows
  • the kitchen had to accommodate social gatherings – our clients wanted to host family events, parties, have friends round – and have seating, space and lots of interaction in the room.

Once the design was agreed it was all down to finishes – what main colour, what accent colours, what mix of textures?

  • The design worked around the amazing picture frame windows.
  • The hob was placed on the island to allow interaction with visitors.
  • The island included seating and storage to both sides.
  • The window seat has storage and of course provides further informal seating.  The windowseat worktop is a concrete effect laminate Topshape worktop.  Made here in Ireland, this square edged laminate is modern and tasteful.

Colour Scheme:

We settled on a scheme of Farrow & Ball Pavillion Grey with Hague Blue on the island, upper wall units and windowseat.

Accents:

The scheme needed further lift – and the mix of shaker doors within the design yielded that.  We included copper chicken wire in the wall units and continued the copper theme with copper knobs and a tap.

Further Feature Accents:

The addition of mirror doors on the island really does deceive the eye and reflects the stools and floor tiles beautifully.  They also  hide some extra storage.

Flooring:

The kitchen floor is a mixture of feature tiles and woodgrain effect tiles – all available at Tile N Style in Graiguecullen, Carlow.  They pick up the colour of the island wonderfully and give a vintage and warming effect.

Pantry Press:

This kitchen is completely at home within its space.  It’s a feast for the eyes – a spectacular and delicious delight within this home.  Its filled with storage – and the bespoke Newhaven Pantry is just the place for treats and goodies!

How this kitchen feels:

This is a modern kitchen with a vintage feel to it.  A grey kitchen with warmth.  A modern kitchen with features and tasteful accents and visual treats.  We’re delighted to see it featured in Irish Kitchens & Bathrooms magazine this month.
